Beauty may be in the eyes of the beholder, but there is no denying the impact good makeup can make on the inside. It can make you feel confident. It can make you feel sexy. And there’s even some research that suggests the right makeup can make some women feel smarter. It just makes us feel good.
In fact, there’s even a business term for the power of makeup. When the economy is down – recession, unemployment rises, financial crisis – women are more willing to spend more on lipstick. It’s a small luxury. A treat. It makes us feel better, more optimistic and more confident.
As a Personal Brand Enhancement and Style Strategist, I’m often asked questions about makeup, skin care, and beauty in general. Because, as much as women know that makeup can do all these things, many don’t feel they’re using makeup properly, or that they’re using makeup to convey their best selves.
Here are the beauty questions I’m most often asked, and the solutions every woman needs to know.
At what age should I start caring for my skin?
As soon as you start wondering when you should! You are never too young to begin cleansing and hydrating skin properly. So much of skincare has to do with prevention and maintenance for treating skin issues, that you can never be too early to follow a skincare routine. That said, there are many products that treat skin problems, too, including acne, dark spots, wrinkles, dryness, and more. Just get yourself a great facialist and dermatologist to help you create a skin care regime that truly works for you.
Which is better: Natural or glamorous makeup?
It’s really a personal preference that suits your personal branding style. And either way, your makeup look needs to do one major thing: Accentuate those beautiful features of yours!
How can I choose the best makeup for my skin tone?
There are many articles from magazines and bloggers that will give tips on choosing foundation for skin tone. And those are informative and all – but I always encourage talking to a makeup artist. As a professional, they can look at your face (impartially!) and understand how different lighting will affect your makeup. Plus – a big plus! – they can show you how to apply foundation for beautiful end result – a gorgeous face.
Eyebrows are so in right now, what do I need to do to make mine look better?
A great set of brows can be natural – but for the majority of women it is really about maintenance of strays and starting a good shape, so make an appointment with the best brow lady in town! That’s the beginning. Then it’s about filling in the brows with a pencil that is one shade lighter than your brow color. That will give your brows a look that’s naturally full.
Should I wear eyeshadow to work?
You would be surprised how often I’m asked this. And the answer depends on what you want your personal brand style to be. Are you in an office environment? In the creative industry? The athletic world? If you’re not into wearing a lot of makeup and prefer a more natural look, you can still wear eyeshadow that enhances your eyes (eye contact is a must if you want people to take what you say seriously). Just choose neutral colors that you’re comfortable with. And if you do opt for a more glamorous eyeshadow application, make sure you blend, blend, blend. Otherwise it just looks sloppy and amateur. Not a look for a professional like yourself.
I’m afraid to put on makeup – help!
Not exactly a question, but so many women approach me about their fear of makeup. But don’t be afraid of taking care of your skin and applying cosmetics. Start slow, if you’re not used to wearing a face of makeup. Try concealer and mascara, first. Then dip into blush and eyeliner. A nude lipstick is very easy to wear – especially if you go for a lippy with a touch of pink. And then, one day, when you’re feeling extra, try a gorgeous red lipstick. It’s a statement lip – so you’ll need to be prepared for the compliments!
