Showcase Your Confidence with Digital Self Expression

“Don’t be satisfied with stories how things have gone with others.  Unfold your own myth.” – Rumi

Social media has been one of the best marketing tools that has ever been developed. As someone who helps develop one’s personal brand through style, demeanor, and lifestyle, social media can present some challenges that deserve careful consideration.

I marvel at the online personalities and influencers who are making a difference and are truly in it to help others. Who hasn’t been enthralled with the social media megastars, athletes, celebrities or political figure’s view and outlook at some point or another? I find inspiration in some of pieces written along with the images that are posted, but I must admit I am not a proclaimed social media engager.

What I find fascinating is how brazen we have become with sharing every facet of our lives. As I watched How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days for the millionth time last weekend the song “You’re So Vain” sung by Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey at the end of the movie brought forward that this is the world we are living in. We tend to curate our lives, celebrate milestones, as well as share achievements and life experiences. This can be helpful and inspiring, but it’s important to remember the intent and impact. When we view the content of social influencers it’s important to remember that this is their profession.

We’ve all found ourselves scrolling through feeds and looking at people’s profiles…well, it is interesting! Inevitably, our interests and focus change, and can impact the content we experience in our social feeds. Consider editing those that you follow to create a curated experience of content. And remember, be respectful and classy when editing those that you follow—even if someone is trying to get to you, remember what Michelle Obama said, “When they go low, we go high”! Editing your social feed is a normal part of your social experience.

Although there are so many positives to social media, we must recognize the negative aspects as well. Social media has played a role when it comes to amplifying the narcissism. In fact, there are proven ways to spot a narcissist on social media. It is important to recognize this behavior and how it is affecting you.

Overall, social media is a great way to develop your brand and build a network – you are your own investment! Pay attention to comments of praise and support and be thoughtful towards those that inspire and inform. The way you engage with others is an important aspect of your personal brand.
