Self-care ~ An investment not an indulgence

Historically when I have spoken or written on the topic of self-care, I stress the importance of how it reflects on one’s personal brand.

I discuss the relevance of expression through personal demeanour and how by extension through our wardrobe we tell our story.

Presenting ourselves with confidence results in success which results in meeting our goals.

For example, the debate over a massage based on time, expense or importance is one that crosses many people’s minds.  Yet, the benefits of a massage are several. While relaxing and ideal for reducing muscle tension, a massage can also help lower blood pressure, improve circulation and posture. Definitely a worthy investment in our health and well-being and most definitely not an indulgence.

As we isolate self-care has become even more challenging given our lack of access to professional services and the challenge to block off time. How do we make this very worthwhile investment in ourselves which is critical to both our physical and mental well-being?

I trust it goes without saying that I have been struggling with this myself.

As such, I invested in some products to make self-care at home a little easier and I have marked off time in my calendar so that loved ones see this time as critical as a business meeting so that I can get some undisturbed time.

Again, this is not an indulgence. This is an investment.

I thought I would share some of the products that I have invested in to ensure I optimize my care during this time.

A complete mani/pedi kit.

A foot bath (to soak my feet while I tend to my hands), quality nail clippers, cuticle clippers, stick and oil, a buffing block, nail polish remover, cotton swabs, base coat, top coat and your favourite nail polish colour.

A calming bath, natural soaps, Epsom salts and a scented candle.

This is a continuous recommendation from educated professionals. It is one of the simplest and easiest self-care regimes. The key really is to incorporate it into your schedule and make it a routine.

Muscle relaxers for your back, feet and neck.

A massage is what I crave most so, I pulled out the massage roller that was in the back of my closet and I have actually been using it every day. Thankfully I already had a heating pad which can be a lifesaver when my back acts up or for any other areas of concern. While these tools do not replace an expert they do offer some relief for strained muscles.

Hair care

Admittedly my hair has been my biggest challenge.  Separate from the fact that I adore my hairstylists, my hair actually requires their direction in order to keep it healthy and maintain it myself.  Over the years, they have taught me about the  importance of quality hair products which is why when my roots started to grow in a little more than I cared for I called to ask for a recommended root-touch up for my hair.  It is never a one size fits all approach.  With some fun hair accessories I manage to put my hair up in a tousled bun or clip it back with a little sparkle.

We cannot replace our professionals nor do we want to, but until we all receive the go-ahead and can resume business let us make the best of it.  Invest in some basic essentials and carve out some alone time in your day.

Remember that self-care is a very worthy investment.
